If you’re like me, you’re already starting to look ahead to holiday menus and something different and delicious you can share at potlucks and gatherings.

As you know, I love old cookbooks, and I ran across the recipe for Jezebel Sauce in one of them. While I didn’t follow the recipe to 100% authenticity, I think you’ll agree that this mouthwatering condiment does it respectful justice.

I couldn’t quite wrap my mind around whisking dry mustard powder into the other ingredients, so I chose stone-ground mustard instead. That’s the only thing I changed.

Sharing and testing it with the guests at a surprise birthday party on Sunday evening was a real treat. The bold, complex flavors of this easy-to-prep condiment were celebrated with rave reviews!

My version of the easy Jezebel Sauce recipe was whisked together and back in the fridge in under five minutes! It’s so simple to make! But don’t let that fool you.

Easy doesn’t mean it can’t be delicious. Every peppery, fruity and spicy bite of Jezebel Sauce delivers on remarkable flavor that no one will quite be able to put their finger on.

The secret is horseradish, and it truly takes center stage as the star in this addictively easy recipe. With only

The Ingredients

Jezebel Sauce Ingredients on a concrete countertop.
  • Pineapple Preserves
  • Apple Jelly
  • Prepared Horseradish – This is plain horseradish, not horseradish sauce that is mixed with mayo or various oils, gums and sugar. It will be labeled ‘Prepared Horseradish,’ and the ingredient list will only have four ingredients: horseradish, vinegar, water, and salt.
  • Stone Ground Mustard
  • Black Pepper, freshly ground

This may seem like a startling combination of ingredients at first blush, but trust me, you’re gonna want to eat this on EVERYTHING!

FAQs

Do I really need to let this sit in the fridge for at least eight hours?

No probably not. Not every version of the recipe I found while studying it recommends this step. What I did find was that it was extremely horseradish forward after first mixing it up. Giving the Jezebel Sauce a rest time in the fridge allowed the flavors to meld beautifully, and though the horseradish was still certainly center-stage, it mellowed in and allowed for the flavors of other ingredients to come through, as well.

Can I just use mustard powder instead of stone-ground mustard?

Absolutely. If using dry mustard powder, I would use about 1 Tablespoon and in my opinion, you would definitely want to allow some fridge time for it to hydrate and meld with the other ingredients fully. Use whatever style of mustard your family likes and that you have on hand. I’m guessing Dijon or spicy brown mustard would be great too.

Ummm … what’s with the name?

From everything I’ve read, it is probably referencing the fiery-spirited Jezebel of the Bible, whose renowned powers of seduction sparked a craving for “more.” I wasn’t able to identify any other names for it. The recipe’s origins are believed to be from the Gulf Coast region of the South.

How long will Jezebel Sauce keep?

It keeps for up to two weeks in an airtight container in the fridge, making it a perfect make-ahead dish for parties and get-togethers. It can be frozen for 3 to 4 months in an airtight, freezer-safe container. Thaw it in the fridge overnight, then whisk to incorporate any liquid that may have separated. Serve as usual.

How to Serve Jezebel Sauce

Luckily, this recipe yields between 5 and 6 cups of sauce. Which means you’ll have no problem refreshing that quick-to-disappear appetizer plate. But you’ll also be able to use Jezebel sauce in lots of other ways.

As An Appetizer:

  • Pour a generous amount of Jezebel Sauce over a block of softened cream cheese and serve it with crackers and other charcuterie. We served ours over cream cheese at the party — alongside birthday cake, a gorgeous charcuterie board, my famous chocolate chip cookies and an assortment of crunchy crackers to shmear cream cheese and Jezebel sauce onto.
  • Serve Jezebel Sauce as the perfect dip for easy Sausage Balls made with Bisquick.
  • I am currently working on a recipe using it in a crockpot meatballs recipe for football and holiday parties. I’ll keep you posted on when it’s added to the blog.

In Main Dish Recipes:

  • Brush or pour it on and use it as the glaze over pork loin. Substitute 1 1/2 cups of Jezebel Sauce for the mustard and maple syrup in my Maple Mustard Slow Cooker Pork Loin recipe. I would still use the Cajun seasoning, but if you prefer less heat, substitute my deliciously simple All-Purpose Seasoning instead.
  • Brush my juicy and tender, perfectly baked chicken breasts with Jezebel Sauce during the last five minutes or so of baking. It will be a scrumptious, sticky glaze baked right onto the chicken.
  • Add 1 1/2 cups to the crock pot with my easy slow cooker chicken breasts recipe. The tender juicy chicken will cook with an abundance of bold, sweet and spicy flavor and produce a delectable sauce to serve over the chicken.
  • You could also mix it deliciously with my Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce and bake up the world’s most delectable glazed ham for Christmas dinner or any special occasion. Simply omit the mustard and add 1 to 1 1/2 cups of Jezebel Sauce to the glaze mixture.

How to Make the Jezebel Sauce Recipe

  1. Add all five ingredients to a mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  3. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for at least eight hours to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Serve over a block of softened cream cheese with a variety of crispy crackers.
