I had a blast making these with my 5-year-old granddaughter, this week. Her enthusiasm and excitement was contagious and I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun.
Of course the finished cookies are crunchy, chocolatey, candy-dipped deliciousness. But, they’re also absolutely adorable. This is a great project to work on with kids. You only need 2 ingredients, your sprinkle collection and some imagination to make this Oreo recipe.
We dipped and decorated the whole package of Oreo cookies in about 30 minutes. You can spend some quality time making these Valentine cookies with your favorite “littles”, too. Bust out the aprons and sprinkles! It’s gonna be a hoot!
The Ingredients
Oreo Cookies : We only used one package and they were regular Oreos. I think the double-stuff would work just as well. You could also use any store brand of chocolate sandwich cookie that you prefer to make this Oreo recipe.
Red Candy Melts : We used the 12 oz. Wilton brand. I bought them easily at our local Walmart. There is a section of cake decorating items in the crafting section and that’s where I find them. I’m guessing there may be other brands of candy melts. I’m just not familiar with them. I’ve never had issues with the Wilton brand so it’s just habit to pick those up.
Handy Tools to Make the Job Easier
Silicone Baking Mats [affiliate link] or Waxed Paper : I have the mats and they were perfect for laying out the cookies to dry. I haven’t tried it, but I’m guessing waxed paper will work easily and be as easy a clean-up.
Toothpicks
Small bowls or prep cups [affiliate link] for the sprinkles : It’s much easier to pinch a few with your fingers and sprinkle or place them where you want. The narrow shaker bottles aren’t as handy for this project. Just pour a few sprinkles from the bottles into a small bowl or cup.
Paper Towels or Wet Wipes: Just something handy to wipe fingers and faces as you work. lol The necessary quality control and taste testing can leave a little residue around the lips. Our granddaughter used my own words back at me as we were decorating the Valentine cookies. “Grandma, remember. A good cook tastes as she’s cooking to make sure it will be okay for everybody else.” lol
My Sprinkle Collection
I seem to collect bottles and jars of sprinkles with reckless abandon. This makes me about the coolest Grandma ever when a particular 5-year-old shows up. When we’re baking together she knows right where to go to find all her favorite colors and shapes.
I typically just pick up seasonal sprinkles at Walmart, but I did order candy eye balls [affiliate link] on Amazon, this time, as Walmart was out of those. The set I ordered had large and small googly eyes and the plain black dots you see I have used on some of the lady bugs in this particular Oreo cookie recipe.
The Valentine sprinkles came in a two-part bottle that had the red, white and pink dots in one side and the little red and pink candy hearts in the other. They were the Walmart store brand (Great Value).
The pastel sprinkles were Wilton brand and also purchased at Walmart. They are called Spring Sprinkles.
How to Make Oreo Cookie Valentine Love Bugs
Add the candy melts to a microwave safe bowl and heat them on 50% power. Go 30 seconds at a time, until they are fully melted. It took about 1 1/2 minutes for ours.
Set up the area you’ll be working with silicone mats or wax paper. Prepare your work space with toothpicks, paper towels and shallow bowls with your sprinkle options and candy eyes. Have the melted candy and Oreos in a central location, so everything is easy to reach.
Begin by dipping a chocolate sandwich cookie straight down into the bowl of melted red candy. Before lifting it out, gently rock it to the left and then to the right. That creates the curved line to separate the head and the body.
Lift the cookie straight up out of the candy and let the excess drip off before laying it out on the waxed paper or silicone mat.
Add your sprinkle decorations before the candy dries and then move on to repeat the dipping and decorating process with all the cookies.
Pinch a few round sprinkles in your fingers and sprinkle them over the red candy area. If you have them, press 1 or 2 candy hearts into the red candy, too. For the eyes, we used a toothpick to dollop some melted candy onto the cookie and then pushed the eyes down into it.
Ours dried in about 30 minutes. I was able to put some of the Valentine cookies on a paper plate in a large zip-top bag for our granddaughter to take home with her. I just stored ours in a large zip-top bag on the counter. They didn’t last long. 😉
